Department: World Languages, Literatures, and Humanities

Through the study of the language, literature, and civilization of various cultures, the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Humanities aims to enrich the education of all students and prepare them for various careers.

The Department offers Majors in French and Spanish and Minors in Applied Linguistics, Creole, Film Studies, Food Studies, French and Francophone Studies, Italian Studies, Latin American Studies, Puerto Rican Studies, Spanish, Women's Studies and World Literature. In addition, Certificates of Study are offered in French for Professionals Purposes, Spanish for Professional Purposes, and Creole for Professional Purposes.  It also offers stand-alone courses in Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin), interdisciplinary courses in the Humanities, and courses in English as a Second Language.

The instructional program is enhanced by a state-of-the-art digital Language Laboratory and web supported materials. Annual events sponsored by the department helping to reinforce the instructional program are poetry contests, student journals, international film festivals, conferences, and colloquia, designed not only to enhance the academic program but also to involve high schools in the Queens area and the Jamaica community.
