Transfer Admissions
Applicants who have attended college, university, or a proprietary school after graduating from high school, or who have received a GED/TASC, are classified as transfer or advanced-standing students. This classification applies regardless of whether you are seeking transfer credit or changing your program of study. All applicants are required to submit an official transcript from each institution attended, along with proof of high school graduation.
Transfer admission is based on your overall GPA from all institutions since graduating high school. If you have fewer than 12 credits, you need a minimum GPA of 2.0, must meet the CUNY Proficiency Requirements, and qualify based on your high school average or GED/TASC score.
Students transferring to York College must complete at least 40 credits at York, with at least half of the credits in their major program taken at the college. Some programs may require more credits for graduation. For a Bachelor of Arts, 90 credits must be in liberal arts; for a Bachelor of Science, at least 60 liberal arts credits are needed; and for a Bachelor of Music, at least 30 liberal arts credits are required. You must maintain a minimum overall GPA of "C" in all college coursework to graduate from York College. To apply, please visit CUNY's Website.
Evaluation of Prior College Credits (Transfer Credits)
The Office of the Registrar evaluates all courses taken at other accredited institutions in collaboration with academic departments. Credit is usually granted for equivalent courses if a student earned a "D" or better from CUNY or "C" or better from other accredited institutions.
Transfer students may receive blanket credit for courses in related disciplines without precise equivalents. However, they will not get credit for a "D" grade from non-CUNY colleges, although they may not need to retake the course if required at York College.
Transfer students must seek academic advisement from their major department before enrolling. Students cannot receive credit for courses already completed at another institution, nor can credits be granted from schools not listed on their admissions application.
Maximum Credits Accepted
Although all transferable credits will be evaluated by the Office of the Registrar, a maximum of 68 credits will be accepted from a two-year non-CUNY college or degree program. A maximum of 80 credits will be accepted from a non-CUNY senior college.
Special Examinations
Credit(s) will be granted for the following examinations:
ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages)
AICE (Cambridge Advance International Certificate Education Program)
AP (Advanced Placement)
CLEP (College Level Examination Program)
CPEP (College Proficiency Examination Program)
DLPT (Defense Language Proficiency Test)
DSST (DANTES Subject Standardized Tests)
ECE (Excelsior College Exams)
NYU Language Exam
USAFI (United States Armed Forces Institute)
Credits will be awarded for the examinations listed above, which evaluate knowledge in specific subjects rather than general knowledge. Upon a student's request and with the approval of the relevant departments, credits may be granted or exemptions from certain courses may be provided if the student can demonstrate a grade of "C" or better on any of these college-level examinations. A maximum of 16 credits can be earned in this manner; however, nursing majors may earn up to 20 credits.
