The CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) is an intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program located in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Humanities at York College. It is designed for students who have been accepted to CUNY but need to enhance their academic English skills before enrolling in college courses.

Participants defer their acceptance for up to one year and can attend classes for 25 hours each week, with day and evening sessions available in two fifteen-week cycles and a six-week summer cycle. By enrolling in CLIP, students enhance their English skills and can preserve their financial aid for graduation-required courses. Participation is voluntary, allowing students to exit the program and return to their home campus after any cycle.

The CLIP program helps students develop their English language skills in a comprehensive way, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It prepares students for academic success by using real subjects like history, literature, science, and the arts. Students read both fiction and non-fiction and write essays based on what they learn. This approach helps them improve their reading, writing, speaking, and research skills—important skills needed to succeed in college.

A major goal of CLIP is to help students connect with the larger college community and understand college life. Students are encouraged to take part in college activities and events. This participation helps them learn about different majors and career options at CUNY and covers important topics like credits, transcripts, Pathways Requirements, and financial aid. The program provides many orientation sessions and workshops to support students.

Since 1996, CLIP-York has helped thousands of students who came with significant language or academic needs achieve academic success.
