The Major (Choosing/Declaring/Changing)

Students may choose a major from a variety of liberal arts programs and/or professional programs. Professional programs require approval from the academic department chairperson for admission to these programs. Each student is encouraged to develop an academic plan with the assistance of their faculty advisor.

University policy states that matriculated students (i.e., those pursing a degree) who have earned 60 credits or more must declare a major in a baccalaureate degree program approved by New York State Inventory of Registered Programs. This policy has been established to facilitate completion of a student's degree within a timely manner. The Office of the Registrar will place a hold on any student's record, which will prevent registration until a major is declared. Students should be aware that the Major and/or Minor requirements reflected in the York College Bulletin at the time of declaration will apply. For more information on the academic programs offered, please visit the Academic Programs (Majors and Minors) section of this Bulletin.

Declaring or Changing a Major and/or Minor

Matriculated students who have decided to declare a major and/or minor or change their current major and/or minor must complete, sign and date the Declaration Major/Minor form located on the Office of the Registrar homepage. This form must be uploaded, along a valid photo ID, to the Office of the Registrar secure portal. Be aware that a change of major and/or minor may have an effect on a student’s Financial Aid eligibility (see the section on Satisfactory Academic Progress in this bulletin).
