Department: Behavioral Sciences
The mission of our department is to provide students with a strong academic foundation that will prepare them for the challenges of careers and graduate study. We strive to offer a flexible curriculum to meet the needs of our diverse student body and to foster personal and professional growth. Students have the opportunity for community-based internships as well as independent research and study with individual faculty members. The disciplines of Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology combine academic excellence with a strong focus on experiential learning.
Political Science
The Political Science program supports the mission of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and York College by preparing students for successful careers and advanced studies, while fostering active citizenship in a dynamic world. It develops critical reading, writing, and thinking skills for analyzing political systems and power dynamics. The program promotes community service through coursework and internships, allowing students to conduct independent research and gain mentorship from faculty. Our flexible curriculum caters to the diverse interests of the college community, aiming to create informed, socially responsible, and ethical citizens and leaders.
Psychology
The Psychology discipline equips students with essential knowledge, skills, and values for their undergraduate education as part of a liberal arts foundation. The program integrates theoretical and research aspects of psychology using diverse teaching methods, preparing students for careers or graduate studies while emphasizing the importance of diversity and cross-cultural issues.
Sociology
The Sociology Program enhances cultural and social awareness and promotes respect for diverse communities. It prepares students to critically analyze social issues and institutions, recognize behavioral trends, and understand societal factors. Students also develop research and quantitative literacy skills through a broad curriculum focused on theory, critical thinking, and research methods, aligning with York College’s mission.
