Description

This course prepares candidates for teaching in multilingual contexts, primarily focusing on leveraging students' home languages alongside English. The curriculum emphasizes creating an environment that celebrates the diverse linguistic identities in the classroom. Candidates will explore innovative pedagogical approaches to literacy development, using the science of reading and key theories to foster multiliteracy and translanguaging, emphasizing students’ home language development. A particular focus will be analyzing critical linguistic systems in home language and the interplay of English in K-12 students. Candidates will investigate the cognitive, social, and academic benefits of maintaining and developing home languages to promote equity in the classroom. The second part of this course requires a 2-hour lab each week. This lab will focus on implementing what is learned in the lecture class as well as in the fieldwork environment. This will be tailored to the candidates’ specific home language being taught and content literacy within the subject area(s). Fieldwork will be required.
