Course Title

Popular Music as Protest

Description

Throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, popular music was repeatedly used as a form of protest that expressed the desires and dreams of musicians and their audiences. From folk to soul to funk to rock to punk to hip-hop, popular musicians frequently critiqued society in hopes of building a better world. Over the course of the semester, students will examine the repertoire of major musicians who protested injustice through song, beginning in the 1930s.
