Assessing Community Health Needs, Capacity & Assets

This course focuses on the practices and tools to assess perceived and actual community health needs, assets and capacity to develop and implement public health interventions. Students are introduced to techniques for using secondary data (e.g. publicly available health department data) to examine community health status as well as, methods for collecting primary data (e.g. surveys, focus groups, interviews) to help support the development of a rationale, for public health intervention design and implementation. Emphasis is placed on conducting assessments and interpreting and prioritizing findings with community members, community leaders, community- based organizations, health providers and others.
