This course provides students an overview of the history and legacy of slavery in the U.S. As historians and social scientists have demonstrated, African American life is today powerfully shaped by the institution of chattel slavery. This course goes over the changes in the kinship system, welfare, and what scholars are calling the "prison industrial complex."
